Dr. Omar Durán-García joined Poly Prep as an Upper School history teacher in 2023. He holds a BA in Art History, Spanish, and Latin American and Iberian Studies from the University of Delaware. Omar was born in Guanajuato, Mexico and was raised in Wilmington, Delaware. He moved to New York City in 2014 to complete his PhD in Latin American and Iberian Cultures at Columbia University. Before joining Poly, Omar was a lecturer on Spanish and Latin American cultures at Columbia University and Barnard College. His research and teaching interests include Latin American cultural history, gender, sexuality, and queer studies, as well as medical and health humanities. When not teaching, Omar enjoys watching softball, reading contemporary Mexican fiction, and caring for his houseplants.
